In one of the first scenes of Out of Africa , Meryl Streep, who plays the future baroness, speeds across the expanse of Africa. Arriving in Nairobi, she marries Bror, Baron von Blixen, in an ivory gown and a "hat made to dazzle." They depart shortly after for their new farm in the Ngong Hills.
Over the coming weeks and months, the Baroness unpacked her belongings from Denmark: crystal and Limoges, a cuckoo clock, a sofa and chairs draped in chintz, mahogany tables, hand-knotted rugs, silver, and lace. She mixed all of this with Kikuyu textiles, big-game skins, and trophies to create a colonial look distinct from a particular period in history.
Carefully handcrafted from natural rattan, this shell-shaped coaster offers a touch of classic elegance reminiscent of Baroness von Blixen's farmhouse in the Ngong Hills.
