On the way to a family wedding in France, we stopped in Madrid. That was a first time in Spain, and, to relish the experience, we reserved a table for two in a restaurant considered an institution. It was elegantly trellised and decorous and well-worn by serving the city of Madrid since Belle Epoque.

Our table for two was seated next to another table for two. Because of their proximity, I enjoyed a front-row seat to a dance of seduction. Flirty movements of a Spanish woman’s black lace fan, to her chest, to her cheek, to her nose, chin, and lips. That fan was a heartbeat, a heartbeat of want, of like, of love.
