In one of the early scenes of Out of Africa, Meryl Streep, portraying the soon-to-be baroness, steams across the wideness of Africa. Upon arriving in Nairobi, she marries Bror, Baron von Blixen, in an ivory dress and a “hat made to be stunning”.
They leave shortly after for their new farm in the Ngong Hills. Over the coming weeks and months, the Baroness unpacks her belongings from Denmark: crystal and Limoges, a cuckoo clock, a sofa and chairs draped in chintz, tables of mahogany, hand-knotted rugs, silver, and lace.
She mixes all of that with Kikuyu textiles and big-game skins and trophies for a distinctly colonial look from a particular time in history.
Handmade with care from natural rattan, this basket offers a touch of classic elegance reminiscent of Baroness von Blixen's farm in the Ngong Hills.
